  8. This is the free version of PC Eudora.  There is a commercial version of
  9. PC Eudora.  If want any information about the commercial version (such as
  10. what advantages it has over the free version, or what the pricing is for
  11. the commercial version), please send some email to eudora-sales@qualcomm.com,
  12. or call (800) 2-EUDORA (that's 1-800-238-3672).  The commercial version is
  13. offered for a very reasonable price, and has many features that make it a
  14. more valuable tool than the free version.

  17. PC Eudora is an electronic mail tool based on Eudora for the Macintosh.
  18. This version has been completely rewritten by QUALCOMM Incorportated,
  19. San Diego, CA in C++, using the Zinc Interface Library for the Graphical
  20. User Interface.  Those familiar with Eudora should have no problems using
  21. PC Eudora, and even new users will find PC Eudora to be easy to learn and use.

  28. This PC Eudora Software is owned by QUALCOMM Incorporated.  
  29. QUALCOMM grants to the user a nonexclusive license to use this PC Eudora 
  30. Software solely for its internal business purposes.  The user shall not 
  31. commercially distribute, sublicense, resell, or otherwise transfer for any 
  32. consideration, or reproduce for any such purposes, the PC Eudora software 
  33. or any modification or derivation thereof, either alone or in conjunction 
  34. with any other product or program.  Further, the user shall not modify the 
  35. PC Eudora Software, other than for its own internal business use.

  52. Minimum Requirements

  55. PC Eudora for MS Windows requires the following:
  56.  
  57.     - IBM PC compatible machine
  58.     - MS Windows Version 3.1
  59.     - WinSock v1.1 compliant TCP/IP stack
  60.     - Microsoft (or compatible) mouse (highly recommended)
  61.     - At least 750KB of free disk space (more depending on mailbox sizes)

  65. How to Install
  66. --------------

  68. 1.  Create a new directory for the eudora files (C:\EUDORA is a good choice).
  69.  
  70.  
  71. 2.  Copy the executable file into the directory you created in step #1:
  72.  
  73.     WEUDORA.EXE
  74.

  76. 3.  Add the following environment variable to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
  77.  
  78.     SET TMP=C:\TMP                 (or some temp directory)
  79.  
  80.     Make sure that this directory exists.
  81.  
  82.  
  83. 4.  PC Eudora makes use several different TCP/IP services, and has default
  84.     port numbers for these services.  Most sites put these services on the
  85.     default ports, but some may not.  Contact your site network adminstrator
  86.     to make sure that the following services listed in this step indeed
  87.     have the default port numbers.  If they don't, you'll have to make
  88.     some changes (usually to a SERVICES file) to some file(s) on your PC.
  89.  
  90.     Below are a list of the services which PC Eudora uses, and what they
  91.     might look like in a typical services file.  The names of these services
  92.     must be exactly as named here (e.g. the entry for the POP3 service must
  93.     be "pop3" and not "pop-3").  Make sure that you make any changes necessary
  94.     for your TCP/IP package to specifiy the location of the SERVICES file.
  95.

  102.     To use Ph (if your site has a Ph server):

  109.     password changing server, see the directory mac/eudora/1.4/contrib on

  114. 5.  Run MS Windows and add PC Eudora as a Program Item to a new or existing
  115.     Program Group.
  116.  
  117.     If you wish your mail files to reside somewhere other than where the
  118.     executable resides, then you can set the mail directory by specifying
  119.     the directory as the first parameter on the command line of the
  120.     Program Item that you create for PC Eudora.
  121.  
  122.     This is useful if you want to keep the executable on a server, but each
  123.     user has their own mail heirarchy.  It also works for when you want to
  124.     have multiple users on one PC.  Always keep the help file in the same
  125.     directory as the executable.
  126.  
  127.     PC Eudora will use the directory on the command line first.  If
  128.     that isn't present the directory where the executable resides will be
  129.     used.

  132. The first time you run PC Eudora for Windows you will have to edit
  133. some of the configuration information in order to be able to send and 
  134. receive mail.  
  135.  
  136.  
  137. Select Configurations from the Special Menu.  The fields you need to
  138. review are:
  139.  
  140.     POP Account:     This should be set to the address where you receive
  141.                      your mail. The entry must be entered in the following
  142.                      form: 
  143.                          "username@machine_name"
  144.                      This is a required field on this screen.
  145.  
  146.     SMTP Server:     This should be set to the address of a machine that
  147.                      supports SMTP. If the machine that your POP account is
  148.                      on supports SMTP, you need not fill this in (Eudora will
  149.                      use the machine your POP account is on to deliver mail
  150.                      also).

  152.     Return Address:  This should be set to the address of how you wish your
  153.                      return address to appear in mail that you send.  If your
  154.                      POP account (as shown above) is also your return address
  155.                      then you can leave this field blank also.

  157.     Real Name:         This is field you can use to fill in your actual name
  158.                      (i.e. John Smith) and it will be appended to the 
  159.                      return address in messages you send, enclosed in 
  160.                      parentheses.

  164. Additional Configuration Notes
  165. ------------------------------
  166. There is a file named CHANGES that should come along with the PC Eudora
  167. distribution.  This file has important information about how to use some of
  168. the features in PC Eudora.
  169.  
  170. If you have the New Mail Notification "Sound" switch on, then when new mail
  171. arrives, you will hear a notification sound.  In order for this to work,
  172. your system must have a properly configured sound board, or you must have
  173. installed the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker (anonymous ftp from 
  174. ftp.cica.indiana.edu, the file /pub/pc/win3/sounds/speak.exe).  Eudora has a
  175. built in sound, but if you wish to supply your own, it must be in .WAV format.
  176. To change the default new mail sound, edit the EUDORA.INI file and add an
  177. entry entry in the [Miscellaneous] section called NewMailSound.  Set the entry
  178. to the name to the filename of the wave file.  If the entry is just a
  179. filename, with no path, then PC Eudora will look for it in the mail directory.
  180. Here's an example of what it may look like in the INI file:

  186. If the mail you are sending is bouncing back to you saying that the message
  187. does not have a Date: header, add the following entry to your EUDORA.INI file:
  188.

  190. TimeZone=xxxnnnyyy
  191.  
  192. where xxx, yyy are timezone abbreviations like PST, PDT, CDT, and nnn is
  193. the offset in hours WEST of GMT (i.e those that are east of GMT should
  194. enter a negative number here).  xxx is the timezone during Standard Time
  195. and yyy is the timezone during Daylight Savings Time.  If you do not
  196. change your clocks during Daylight Savings Time, leave yyy blank.
  197. Here's some samples:
  198.      TimeZone=PST8PDT
  199.      TimeZone=MET-1
  200.  
  201. If you don't specify a TimeZone entry, then a Date: header will not be
  202. put in outgoing messages, which is fine for most because their mail server
  203. will insert the correct Date: header.  The moral is: if you don't get
  204. messages bounced because of a missing Date: header, then leave the
  205. TimeZone entry alone.

  215. Send any and all bugs to pc-eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com, and we'll try
  216. to respond to you as quickly as possible.  The bug address is to be used for
  217. reporting bugs only.  There is no support for the free version of PC Eudora.
  218. If you would like technical support, please consider purchasing the commercial
  219. version of PC Eudora (email to eudora-sales@qualcomm.com, or 1-800-2-EUDORA).

  221. If the bug involves a GPF, then be sure to include a Dr. Watson log file.
  222. There's an application called Dr. Watson (it's in your Windows directory,
  223. DRWATSON.EXE) that will write some important debugging information to a log
  224. file (DRWATSON.LOG, also in the Windows directory), and will also prompt
  225. you to jot down a few words about what you were doing when the crash
  226. occurred.  This information is extremely helpful for tracking down
  227. problems.  In his spare time, Dr. Watson enjoys sitting as an icon at the
  228. bottom of the screen.

  230. The entries are appended to the end of the log file, so it can grow very
  231. large.  Periodically delete the file to keep its size to a minimum.  When
  232. you include a log file as part of a bug report, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,
  233. edit the log file so that only the pertinent part(s) are included.  It's
  234. really not fun to wade through months of someone's log file.
  235.  
  236. You can make a Program Item for Dr. Watson in your StartUp Program Group so
  237. that you don't have to manually start it every time your start Windows.
